Type of Practitioner:

Karmi Patel, MD FACP is a practicing physician, board certified in Internal Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr Patel attended Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica and received her medical degree in 2000.  She did her residency at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ where she also served as chief resident and a teaching attending after her training. She was recipient of Sister Marie dePazzi, C.S.J.P. Outstanding Resident Award during her senior year. She currently practices at William C Tallent VA Outpatient Clinic in Knoxville, TN. Dr Patel has been part of American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Indian Society of Lifestyle Medicine.
Dr. Patel grew up in India and was exposed to herbal medicine with Ayurvedic practice which led to her interest in implementing a whole food, plant based (WFPB) approach for treating, preventing and reversing diseases. Dr Patel is firm believer in the true Hippocrates oath- “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
Dr. Patel and her husband have two kids (ages 9 and 6) and the entire family follows the whole food plant based lifestyle.

Plant-Based Experience:
American College of Lifestyle Medicine

Dr. Patel may be very qualified in a plant-based diet; however, she severely lacks an understanding of a support network for her patients when it comes to a major and necessary lifestyle change following a type II diabetes diagnosis. Having taken many hours away from my own job to support my partner with his new diagnosis, Dr. Patel was extremely curt with me, not answering my questions, and refused to engage me in any of the discussions. Research overwhelmingly shows that a supportive partner can have a dramatic positive impact on lifestyle changes related to diet and physical activity. I hope Dr. Patel sees this and considers revising how she treats her patient's support individuals.
